8 Common eSIM Setup Problems and How to Fix Them

You bought an eSIM, followed the steps — and something went wrong. Don't worry, you're not alone. eSIM technology is excellent, but the setup process has a few common hurdles that catch people off guard.
Here are the 8 most frequent eSIM problems and exactly how to fix each one.
1. "This device doesn't support eSIM"
Problem: Your phone shows no eSIM option, or throws an error when you try to add one.
Why it happens: Not all smartphones support eSIM. Older models and some region-specific versions have the feature disabled.
Fix:
- iPhone XR, XS and later → eSIM supported
- Samsung Galaxy S20 and later → eSIM supported
- Google Pixel 3 and later → eSIM supported
- Go to Settings > Cellular / Mobile Data. If you see "Add eSIM" or "Add Plan", your device is compatible.
Note: Some regional versions have eSIM locked at the software level. Check your exact model number if unsure.
2. Phone is carrier-locked — eSIM won't install
Problem: The eSIM profile seems to be loading but the process never completes, or you get an error.
Why it happens: Your phone is SIM-locked to your current carrier and won't accept eSIM profiles from other providers.
Fix:
- Contact your carrier's customer support and request a SIM unlock.
- Most carriers unlock for free once your contract period is over.
- After unlocking, retry the eSIM installation.
3. Can't scan the QR code
Problem: You hold the camera over the QR code but nothing happens, or you get an "invalid code" error.
Why it happens: Screen brightness is too low, the code is displayed on another screen causing distortion, or some carriers block screenshot QR codes.
Fix:
- Maximize the brightness of the screen displaying the QR code.
- If scanning from another screen, try printing the code instead.
- On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Scan QR Code
- On Android: Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager > Add eSIM
- Still not working? Ask your provider for a manual activation code as an alternative.
4. eSIM installed but no internet
Problem: The profile installed successfully and shows as active, but you have no mobile data.
Why it happens: APN (Access Point Name) settings didn't configure automatically. This sometimes needs to be set manually.
Fix:
- Go to Settings > Cellular > select your eSIM line > APN Settings.
- Find the correct APN details on your provider's website or confirmation email.
- Enter the APN manually and restart your phone.
- On iPhone, if APN didn't come automatically, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
5. Software is out of date
Problem: You're seeing unexpected errors, steps look different, or some options are missing.
Why it happens: eSIM functionality works properly only from certain iOS or Android versions. Older software causes setup issues.
Fix:
- iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update
- Android: Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- After updating, retry the eSIM setup. This step solves far more problems than people expect.
6. Reached the maximum number of eSIM profiles
Problem: You get an error saying "eSIM cannot be added" or "SIM limit reached".
Why it happens: iPhones can store up to 8 eSIM profiles, but the number active simultaneously depends on the model (iPhone 13 and earlier: 2 active eSIMs).
Fix:
- Go to Settings > Cellular and delete old eSIM profiles you no longer need.
- Warning: Some eSIM profiles cannot be re-downloaded once deleted. Check your provider's terms first.
- After clearing space, try adding the new eSIM again.
7. Data roaming is off — no internet despite active eSIM
Problem: The eSIM is active and you have signal, but mobile data isn't working — especially when abroad.
Why it happens: Data roaming is turned off. When an eSIM connects to a foreign network, roaming must be enabled for data to flow.
Fix:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular > select your eSIM line > enable Data Roaming
- Android: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > enable Data Roaming
- Also make sure your eSIM is selected as the default line for Mobile Data.
8. Activation delay — "Profile won't activate"
Problem: Everything was done correctly, but there's no signal and the profile isn't connecting.
Why it happens: Some eSIM activations aren't instant — they can take a few minutes to a few hours depending on the carrier and country.
Fix:
- Wait 15–30 minutes, then toggle Airplane Mode on and off.
- If still nothing, power your phone off completely and back on.
- If it's been more than 2 hours, contact your eSIM provider — they can often trigger activation manually.
None of these worked — what now?
If you've tried everything above and the problem persists:
- Before factory resetting, back up your eSIM profile if possible (available on some devices).
- Reach out to your eSIM provider's customer support — they can usually reset and resend your profile.
- If the issue seems hardware-related, take your device to an authorized service center.
