Frequently Asked Questions

France eSIM

France has strong 4G/LTE coverage in cities, towns and along major roads. Paris and other big cities also have solid 5G in many areas. In rural parts, the Pyrenees or remote countryside coverage can get thinner, but for most of your trip you'll have no issues at all.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Two minutes and it's done. Set it up at home before your flight so you land in Paris already connected — useful for getting from CDG or Orly straight into the city.
Paris has two main airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG), the main international hub north of the city, and Orly (ORY), slightly closer to the centre and used mostly for European and domestic flights. Other notable airports include Lyon Saint-ExupĂ©ry (LYS), Nice CĂŽte d’Azur (NCE), Marseille Provençal (MRS), Bordeaux (BOD) and Toulouse Blagnac (TLS).
Card payments are the norm in France and accepted almost everywhere. Even small boulangeries and cafĂ©s usually have a card reader. The one exception is some traditional markets, small village shops and parking meters, where cash is still expected. It’s worth having 20–50 euros on you just in case.
Spring (April–June) is lovely almost everywhere — mild weather, the countryside in bloom and Paris at its most photogenic. July and August are peak tourist season in Paris and the south, so expect crowds and higher prices. September and October are great for wine regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy during harvest. Ski season in the Alps and Pyrenees runs December to April.

Travel Tips

France — Useful tips for your trip

Get a Navigo card if you’re spending more than a few days in Paris. It covers the metro, RER, buses and even suburban trains, and works out much cheaper than buying individual tickets. You can load it at any metro station. The weekly pass (lundi–dimanche) is especially good value if you arrive on a Monday.

Book major Paris attractions well in advance. The Louvre, MusĂ©e d’Orsay and the Eiffel Tower all require timed entry tickets bought online, and slots fill up fast in summer. Trying to queue on the day is a losing battle. Check each attraction’s official website for the latest booking system.

The French take their lunch break seriously. Many smaller shops, pharmacies and local businesses close between 12:00 and 14:00, especially outside Paris. Plan your shopping or errands around this. Restaurants on the other hand are at their best at lunch — the plat du jour is usually excellent and much cheaper than dinner.

France’s TGV high-speed train network is excellent and often faster than flying city to city once you count airport time. Paris to Lyon takes 2 hours, Paris to Marseille under 3. Book via SNCF Connect or Trainline. Fares are much cheaper if you book a few weeks ahead.

A few words of French go a long way. Starting any interaction with “Bonjour” and ending with “Merci” makes a real difference in how you’re treated, especially outside Paris. French people aren’t unfriendly — they just appreciate the basic courtesy of being greeted properly before a question.
