Frequently Asked Questions

Spain eSIM

Spain has one of the best mobile networks in Europe. 4G/LTE is very strong in cities and coastal areas, and 5G is widespread in Madrid, Barcelona and other major cities. On some remote islands and in a few mountain regions the connection can weaken, but for most travellers it’s rarely an issue.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Set it up at home before you fly — handy for heading straight from Barajas or El Prat into the city with Google Maps and Bolt already working.
Madrid has Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas (MAD), one of Europe’s biggest airports. Barcelona has El Prat (BCN). Other key airports include Málaga (AGP) for the Costa del Sol, Alicante (ALC), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Tenerife (TFN and TFS), Las Palmas (LPA) on Gran Canaria, Seville (SVQ), Valencia (VLC) and Bilbao (BIO).
Card payments are widely accepted in Spain in most restaurants, hotels, shops and bars. On some weekly markets and in very small local bars cash may be the only option. In tourist areas and cities it’s rarely an issue. Keep a small amount of euros for the occasional tip or market cash machine.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for most regions — pleasant temperatures, no oppressive heat and fewer crowds than summer. July and August are brutally hot in Barcelona and Madrid but perfect on the coasts and the Canary Islands for the beach. The Canaries have mild weather year-round and are a solid option even in winter.

Travel Tips

Spain — Useful tips for your trip

Spain eats late — very late. Lunch starts around 14:00–15:00 and dinner rarely before 21:00, often after 22:00 in big cities. Restaurants open at 18:00 are aimed at tourists. If you want to eat where locals eat, adjust to the rhythm — you’ll find much better food at lower prices.

Spain’s high-speed AVE train network is one of the best in the world. Madrid–Barcelona takes just 2.5 hours, Madrid–Seville 2.5 hours. It’s faster and often cheaper than flying once you factor in airport time. Book in advance on Renfe.com for the best fares.

In the Basque Country and Catalonia, locals genuinely appreciate knowing a few words of the local language. In Barcelona a simple ‘Gràcies’ (thank you in Catalan) goes down well, and in San Sebastián or Bilbao people are pleased when you know that ‘Eskerrik asko’ is thank you in Basque. You don’t have to be an expert — the gesture counts.

Street noise and nightlife in Spanish cities is real and can go on until 4 or 5am, especially on weekends. If you’re an early sleeper, choose your hotel carefully — a room facing a courtyard or a quieter street can mean the difference between a good night’s sleep and none at all.

Sundays in Spain are genuinely quiet, especially outside tourist centres. Many shops, supermarkets and some restaurants are closed. Plan your shopping and meals around it. In smaller towns Sunday can feel almost deserted — which has its own charm, but isn’t ideal if you need to get things done.
