Frequently Asked Questions

Japan eSIM

Japan has some of the fastest and most reliable mobile networks in the world. You'll get strong 4G/LTE practically everywhere — cities, countryside, mountain towns, even inside most train tunnels. Coverage drops only in very remote hiking areas. Overall it's one of the best countries in the world to use a mobile eSIM.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Takes two minutes. Set it up at home before you fly — Tokyo's airports are busy and you'll want to be online straight away for maps and transport apps.
Tokyo is served by two airports: Narita (NRT), the main international hub about 60km from the city, and Haneda (HND), which is closer to the centre and increasingly popular for international flights. Osaka has Kansai International Airport (KIX). Other notable airports include Nagoya (NGO), Sapporo (CTS) and Fukuoka (FUK).
Japan is still largely a cash society, though things are slowly changing. Many smaller restaurants, temples, local shops and vending machines only accept cash. Bigger department stores and most hotels take cards. It's worth getting some yen before you arrive — 7-Eleven ATMs across the country reliably accept foreign cards if you need to withdraw.
Spring (late March to early May) is famous for cherry blossoms and is absolutely stunning — but also the busiest and most expensive time. Autumn (October–November) is equally beautiful with red and gold foliage and far fewer crowds. Summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk, while winter is cold but great for skiing in Hokkaido and seeing snow-covered temples in Kyoto.

Travel Tips

JapanUseful tips for your trip

Get an IC card (like Suica or Pasmo) on arrival — it works on nearly all trains, buses and subways across Japan and you can even use it to pay at convenience stores. Load it up at any station machine and top it up as you go. Far easier than buying individual tickets every time.

Book the Japan Rail Pass before you leave home, not after you arrive. It can only be purchased outside Japan and gives you unlimited rides on most Shinkansen bullet trains and JR lines. If you're planning to visit multiple cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima, it pays for itself quickly.

Tipping is not done in Japan — not in restaurants, not in taxis, not anywhere. Leaving money on the table can actually cause confusion or even offence. Good service is simply expected and given as standard. Just say 'arigato gozaimasu' and that's more than enough.

Download Google Maps offline for the cities you're visiting and also get the Hyperdia or Google Maps app for train navigation. Japan's train system is incredibly efficient but also complex — having an app that shows you exactly which platform and which train to take saves a lot of confusion, especially in Tokyo and Osaka.

Convenience stores in Japan (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) are genuinely good. Hot meals, fresh sandwiches, decent coffee, ATMs that accept foreign cards, printing services — they're open 24 hours and you'll end up using them daily. Don't walk past one when you're hungry.
