Frequently Asked Questions

United States eSIM

The US has solid 4G/LTE coverage in urban and suburban areas across most states. In major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami 5G is also widespread. In rural areas, national parks and sparsely populated states like Montana or Wyoming coverage can drop significantly or disappear entirely. Worth planning for on road trips through the west.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Set it up at home before your flight — that way you have Maps, Uber and everything else ready the moment you land at JFK, LAX or wherever.
The main international hubs are New York JFK and Newark (EWR), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA), San Francisco (SFO), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Atlanta (ATL) and Seattle (SEA). New York also has LaGuardia (LGA) for domestic flights. Depending where you’re headed, nearly every major city has its own airport.
Yes, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in the US and often preferred. Small tips and parking meter cash can be exceptions. The main thing to know about cards in the US: tips are added at the terminal when you pay — in restaurants usually 18–20% of the bill. This isn’t optional, it’s a social norm.
It completely depends on where you’re going. New York and Los Angeles are fine year-round but summers are hot and crowded. Florida is best in winter and sweltering in summer with hurricane risk. The western national parks — Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone — are best in spring and autumn. New England in October for the fall foliage is hard to beat. One tip: the US is so large that no matter the season there’s always somewhere with perfect weather.

Travel Tips

United States — Useful tips for your trip

Tipping in the US is not optional — it’s expected. In restaurants 18–20%, at bars $1–2 per drink, for Uber and Lyft 10–15%, and for hotel staff a couple of dollars. When you order at a cafĂ© and a tip prompt appears, it can feel like pressure — that’s normal. 10–15% is perfectly fine for a takeaway coffee.

In the US you almost always need a car. Public transport is only really usable in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and a few other cities. Almost everywhere else a car is necessary. Rental cars are affordable and only require a driving licence from your home country. For road trips through national parks, the southwest or the coast a car is simply essential.

Flying between US cities is often cheaper than taking the train and sometimes unavoidable over long distances. Book via Google Flights for the best overview of cheapest days. Domestic flights often have sneaky baggage fees — on budget carriers like Spirit or Frontier you can end up paying for carry-on too. American, Delta and United are pricier but the baggage rules are clearer.

Food portions in the US are often surprisingly large. A ‘medium’ at a fast food place is a large portion by most standards. In sit-down restaurants you can often take half home — this is completely normal and called a ‘doggy bag’. Don’t feel pressured to finish everything.

If you’re visiting national parks, the America the Beautiful pass (~$80/year) pays for itself with just two or three parks. It covers all national parks and federal lands. Book ahead, since popular parks like Yosemite, Zion and Acadia use a timed entry reservation system in summer and spots fill up fast.
