Frequently Asked Questions

Antigua and Barbuda eSIM

Antigua has good 4G/LTE coverage in St. John's and most tourism areas and beaches. In rural areas the signal can thin out. Barbuda has more limited coverage.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — so you land in Antigua already online.
Antigua has V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU), the main gateway for international flights. There are direct connections from Europe, North America and other Caribbean islands. Barbuda is only reachable by small propeller planes or ferry from Antigua.
The currency is the East Caribbean dollar (XCD) but US dollars are widely accepted. Antigua is mid-range for the Caribbean — more expensive than Cuba or Dominican Republic, cheaper than Anguilla or St. Barthélemy. Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants.
Best time is December to April — dry season, little rain and pleasant temperatures (27–30°C). May to November is hurricane season; Antigua itself is less often directly hit but is in the risk zone. The sea has pleasant temperatures year-round.

Travel Tips

Antigua and BarbudaUseful tips for your trip

Antigua is famous for its '365 beaches' — one for every day of the year. Dickenson Bay is popular and lively, Half Moon Bay is wilder and more secluded, Jolly Beach is long and relaxed. English Harbour with historic Nelson's Dockyard (UNESCO) is a must for sailors and history lovers.

Barbuda is Antigua's almost untouched sister island — only 1,800 residents, pink-white beaches and the world's largest colony of frigatebirds. After Hurricane Irma in 2017 the island was almost completely destroyed but has recovered. The ferry from Antigua takes about 90 minutes; small planes about 20 minutes.

Antigua is a major sailing destination — Antigua Sailing Week in April/May is one of the Caribbean's largest regattas. English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are the centres of sailing life. Sailing between the islands is one of the most beautiful ways to experience Antigua.

Antiguan cuisine combines Caribbean, British and African influences. Fungee (a polenta-like dish made from cornmeal) with pepperpot is the national dish. Fresh fish, lobster and suckling pig are plentiful on the coast. Rum punch and local Wadadli beer are the preferred drinks.

Nelson's Dockyard National Park is Antigua's most important historical landmark — a restored English naval yard from the 18th century where Horatio Nelson was once stationed. The Dockyard Museum explains Caribbean naval history. The surroundings of English Harbour are extraordinarily beautiful for hiking.
