Bahrain — Useful tips for your trip
Bahrain is the most liberal of the Gulf states — alcohol is permitted in hotels and licensed restaurants, and the dress code is more relaxed than Saudi Arabia. Still dress respectfully in public areas and mosques. The country is very safe for tourists.
Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain, UNESCO World Heritage) is one of the Middle East's most important archaeological sites — remains of the Dilmun civilisation going back 4000 years. The National Museum explains Bahrain's history excellently. Al-Fateh Grand Mosque is one of the world's largest and is open to visitors.
Bahrain is the birthplace of pearl diving — for centuries it was the world centre of the pearl trade. The Pearling Path (UNESCO) connects historic sites around this tradition. In the Gold Souk and traditional market (Souk al-Qaisariyya) in Muharraq genuine pearls are still sold.
Bahrain's food scene is diverse and excellent. Try machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish, the national dish), muhammar (sweet saffron rice) and fresh Gulf prawns and fish. The Adliya district in Manama has the best restaurant selection. Shawarma stands and baker cafes are cheap and excellent.
Bahrain is a great gateway to the Gulf region. A 25km bridge (King Fahd Causeway) connects it to Saudi Arabia. The F1 Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit in March is a major event. Bahrain's souks are good for gold, spices and traditional handicrafts.
