Travel Tips

BangladeshUseful tips for your trip

The Sundarbans are the world's largest mangrove forest and home to the Bengal tiger (UNESCO World Heritage). Boat tours through the channels are the heart of the experience. Khulna is a good starting point. Spotting a Bengal tiger is possible but rare.

Dhaka is one of the world's most densely populated cities — loud, chaotic and overwhelming for first-time visitors. The historic Old Dhaka area (Puran Dhaka) with Lalbagh Fort and Ahsan Manzil (Pink Palace) is fascinating. Rickshaws are the best transport for short distances in the city centre.

Cox's Bazar has the world's longest natural sea beach — 120km of unbroken sand. It is a popular destination for Bangladeshi domestic tourists. The water is calmer and the beach is better in winter. Saint Martin's Island, Bangladesh's only coral island, is nearby.

Bangladeshi cuisine is rich and aromatic. Biryani (spiced rice with meat) is especially good in Dhaka. Hilsa fish (ilish) is the national fish and has almost religious significance. Try also pitha (traditional rice cakes) and fresh Bengali sweets.

Bangladesh is one of the few countries that attracts genuine adventure tourists without mass tourism. The Chittagong Hill Tracts are one of the most beautiful and least visited mountain regions in South Asia — home to diverse ethnic hill peoples. A permit is required to visit.
