Important note: Belarus is under international sanctions and many western countries have issued travel advisories. Check the current situation and your foreign ministry's recommendations carefully before travelling. Entry requirements have changed.
Minsk is one of the best-preserved Soviet capitals — destroyed in WWII it was rebuilt to a rigid Stalinist plan. Prospect Nezavisimosti (Independence Avenue) is one of Europe's most imposing Soviet boulevards. The old town area (Troitskoye Predmestye) is restored and charming.
Bialowieza (Belovezhskaya Pushcha) is one of Europe's last primeval forests and home to the European bison (UNESCO World Heritage). The forest straddles the border with Poland. It is reachable by train or bus from Brest.
Belarusian cuisine is hearty and delicious. Draniki (potato pancakes, the national dish) with sour cream are essential. Machanka (meat stew with pancakes), kolduny (filled dumplings) and fresh mushroom soups are other specialities. Beer and Zubrovka (bison grass vodka) are traditional drinks.
Brest and Hrodna have well-preserved historic centres and old fortresses. Brest Fortress is one of the most moving WWII memorials in Eastern Europe. Mir Castle and Nesvizh Palace are UNESCO World Heritage sites representing Belarus's noble history.
