Frequently Asked Questions

Belgium eSIM

Belgium has excellent 4G/LTE coverage in cities and across the countryside. Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp and Liège are all very well covered. Even in rural areas and the Ardennes the coverage is normally good.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — so you land in Brussels already online.
Brussels has Brussels-Zaventem Airport (BRU), the main international airport. Charleroi has Brussels South Airport (CRL), used mainly by budget airlines and 45 minutes from the city centre. Liège (LGG) is a major cargo airport with some passenger connections.
Belgium uses the euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted but Belgium is somewhat traditional — some small cafés, market stalls and rural spots still prefer cash. Having some euros on you is always sensible.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — pleasant temperatures and Bruges and Ghent at their most beautiful. Summer is lively with festivals and terrace season. Winter is cold but cosy with Christmas markets, especially in Bruges and Brussels.

Travel Tips

BelgiumUseful tips for your trip

Belgian beer is a UNESCO intangible heritage — and there are over 1500 different varieties. In a traditional brewery café don't order 'a beer' generically, ask what the house recommends. Trappist beers (Westmalle, Rochefort, Chimay) and lambic (gueuze, kriek) are uniquely Belgian styles.

Belgian fries (frieten) are double-fried and bear little resemblance to ordinary chips. Always eat them with mayonnaise — that's the Belgian way, not ketchup. In Bruges and Ghent there are independent frietkoten (chip stands) that locals prefer over restaurant versions.

Bruges is beautiful but extremely touristy in summer. Visit on weekdays and early morning. Ghent is less famous but equally beautiful and has a livelier, more authentic city life. If you can only visit one city beyond Brussels, choose Ghent.

Belgian chocolate is world-famous — but avoid the big chains in tourist zones. The best chocolate boutiques in Bruges and Brussels make handcrafted pralines that impress even serious chocolate lovers. Pierre Marcolini, Neuhaus and Godiva are famous names but there are many excellent smaller makers too.

Belgium has three language communities — French, Flemish (Dutch) and German. Brussels is bilingual. In Flanders (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp) Flemish is spoken, in Wallonia French. Using a word of the local language, even just 'Dank u' or 'Merci', is always appreciated.

Belgium — chocolate, beer, fries and more museums per capita than almost anywhere else. Order your eSIM, get your QR code instantly, scan and set up before you board. Connected in Brussels, Bruges and Ghent, no roaming.
