Travel Tips

BeninUseful tips for your trip

Benin is the birthplace of Vodun (Voodoo) — not the Hollywood cliché but a genuine West African spiritual practice. On 10 January the national Voodoo day is celebrated with ceremonies, costumes and rituals in Ouidah — one of the most fascinating cultural events in West Africa.

Ouidah is the historic centre of the transatlantic slave trade — a moving and important history. The Route des Esclaves (Slave Route) leads from the town centre to the beach where the last enslaved people left Africa. The history museum in the Portuguese fort is excellent.

Abomey was the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of West Africa's most powerful empires. The Royal Palaces of Abomey are UNESCO World Heritage. The kingdom's elite female warriors (the Dahomey Amazons) are famous and served as inspiration for the Black Panther film.

Ganvie is a fascinating stilt village on Lake Nokoué — often called the 'Venice of Africa'. Its 20,000 residents live in houses over the water and move by canoe. Boat tours from Abomey-Calavi take about 30 minutes.

Cotonou is Benin's economic capital — Porto-Novo is the official capital but most accommodation is in Cotonou. The city has lively markets, good West African cuisine and a growing arts scene. Benin is generally one of the safest countries in West Africa for tourists.
