Frequently Asked Questions

Bhutan eSIM

Bhutan has solid 4G coverage in Thimphu, Paro and the main towns. In rural areas and in the mountains the signal can weaken considerably. In remote trekking areas there is often no network at all.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — land in Paro already online.
Bhutan has Paro International Airport (PBH), the only international airport — and one of the world's most challenging to land at due to the narrow mountain pass. Only Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines are permitted to land there. Connections to Delhi, Kolkata, Bangkok, Singapore and other Asian cities.
Bhutan uses the Bhutanese ngultrum (BTN), pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee. Cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants in Thimphu but cash is necessary. Bhutan is not cheap for foreigners due to the mandatory Sustainable Development Fee ($100 per person per night).
March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn) are the best times — pleasant weather and clear mountain views. June to August is monsoon season. Winter (December–February) is cold but clear, ideal for views of Himalayan peaks.

Travel Tips

BhutanUseful tips for your trip

Bhutan has the unique concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) instead of just GDP — the government measures citizen wellbeing rather than just economic growth. This philosophy permeates everything: conservation, culture and tourism. All tourists must book through a tour operator and pay the Sustainable Development Fee.

Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) is Bhutan's most iconic image — a monastery seemingly clinging to a vertical cliff 900m above the Paro valley. The hike up takes 2–3 hours. It is one of the most impressive temple complexes in Asia and spiritually very significant.

Bhutan is one of the last places on earth that preserves Buddhism as state religion and an almost intact traditional culture. Traditional dress (gho for men, kira for women) is legally required in government buildings. The festive Tsechu festivals in ancient dzongs (fortress monasteries) are extraordinarily impressive.

Bhutan is the world's first carbon-negative country — its ancient forests absorb more CO2 than the country emits. The constitution mandates that at least 60% of territory must remain forested. Birdwatching and trekking in pristine Himalayan terrain is unique.

Bhutanese cuisine is based on chilli and cheese — ema datshi (chilli with cheese) is the unofficial national dish and is fiery hot. Red rice (a distinctly nutty Bhutanese variety) is the staple. Butter tea (po cha) is salty not sweet and is a cultural welcome drink.

Bhutan — the land of happiness, Tiger's Nest monastery and untouched Himalayan nature. Bhutan limits tourist numbers to protect its heritage — order your eSIM, get your QR code instantly, set up before you fly. Connected in Thimphu and beyond, no roaming.
