Sarajevo has Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ), with direct flights to Vienna, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London and other European cities. Banja Luka has a smaller airport (BNX).
Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark (BAM), pegged to the euro. Cards are accepted in major cities but cash is important in rural areas. BiH is one of the most affordable travel destinations in Europe.

Travel Tips

Bosnia and HerzegovinaUseful tips for your trip

Sarajevo is one of Europe's most multicultural cities — mosques, Orthodox churches, synagogues and cathedrals stand side by side in the city centre. The Gazi Husrev-beg Bazaar (Baščaršija) is the heart of the Ottoman old town and offers an extraordinary transition between East and West.

Mostar and the Old Bridge (Stari Most, UNESCO World Heritage) are iconic. The bridge was destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian War and authentically rebuilt in 2004. Local divers jump from the bridge into the river — a tradition and local tourist attraction. The old town is beautiful.

Best Bosnian specialities: ćevapi (small minced meat sausages in pita with onions), burek (filo pastry with meat or cheese), begova čorba (Bosnian chicken and vegetable soup) and baklava. Bosnian coffee is served in small copper pots and is strong and black — a ritual, not just a drink.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a complex history — Ottoman heritage, Austro-Hungarian rule, Yugoslavia and the war of the 1990s. Srebrenica-Potocari is an important genocide memorial. The war museum in Sarajevo (Tunnel of Hope) is moving and important.

Kravice waterfalls and the Neretva river offer spectacular nature in Herzegovina. Una National Park in the north is little known but beautiful. Rafting, climbing and hiking are affordable and excellent. Bosnian nature is one of Europe's best-kept secrets.
