British Virgin Islands — Useful tips for your trip
The BVI are the sailing capital of the Caribbean — protected bays, short passages between islands (mostly 5–15 miles), clear water and constant trade winds. Chartering a sailing boat (with or without skipper) is the most popular way to explore. The Bight (Norman Island) and The Bitter End (Virgin Gorda) are legendary anchorages.
The Baths on Virgin Gorda are one of the Caribbean's most beautiful natural wonders — giant granite boulders and tidal pools form natural caves and lagoons. Snorkelling between the boulders is unforgettable. Arrive early before the tour boats. North Sound on Virgin Gorda is an excellent anchorage.
Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke is one of the Caribbean's most famous beach bars — you have to swim ashore to reach it (hence the name). The legendary Painkiller cocktail was invented here. Jost Van Dyke is small, relaxed and a favourite among sailors.
Norman Island is the alleged inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island'. The Caves (snorkel caves) and The Bight are excellent. Anegada is the only flat coral island in the BVI (all others are volcanic) — excellent for snorkelling and famous for fresh lobster.
Road Town on Tortola is the BVI capital and economic centre. It is smaller than expected — compact and relaxed. The BVI borders directly on the US Virgin Islands (USVI) — St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix are easily reachable by water taxi or ferry.
