Frequently Asked Questions

Greece eSIM

Greece has solid 4G/LTE coverage on the mainland and on the bigger islands like Crete, Rhodes, Corfu and Mykonos. On smaller and more remote islands coverage can be weaker or limited to 3G. In Athens, Thessaloniki and tourist centres you’ll have no issues at all.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Set it up at home — so you’re already connected when you land in Athens or step off the ferry on a Greek island.
Athens has the Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’ (ATH), which handles most international flights. Thessaloniki has ‘Macedonia’ Airport (SKG) for northern Greece. Other key airports include Heraklion (HER) on Crete, Rhodes (RHO), Corfu (CFU), Mykonos (JMK) and Santorini (JTR).
Cards are well accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and city shops. In small tavernas, island markets and more remote spots cash is still common. On the islands it’s worth withdrawing cash on arrival since ATMs can occasionally run dry or be out of service, especially in peak season.
The sweet spot for the islands is May–June and September–October — the sea is warm, prices are more reasonable and far fewer crowds than July–August. July and August are peak season with scorching heat, packed islands and prices at their highest. Athens is great to visit year-round and even in winter the weather is mild.

Travel Tips

Greece — Useful tips for your trip

Ferries are the main way to get between Greek islands. Book in advance on Ferryscanner.com or directly through the ferry companies, especially in summer when boats fill up fast. Piraeus port in Athens is the main hub for most island connections.

The ancient sights cost more than you’d expect. The Acropolis ticket (which includes other Athens sites) has gone up in recent years. Buy the combo ticket covering multiple archaeological sites — it’s much better value than paying separately. And go early in the morning before the cruise ship passengers arrive.

Greek lunch is the big meal and dinner comes late — restaurants barely fill up before 21:00. Learn the basics: ‘Parakalo’ (please / you’re welcome), ‘Efharisto’ (thank you) and ‘Yamas’ (cheers) make a real difference. Greek hospitality runs deep and a few words in Greek go much further than you’d expect.

On Santorini, Oia is famous for sunsets but absolutely packed — consider watching from a different viewpoint to avoid the worst of the crowds. On Santorini, Mykonos and other popular islands water is a limited resource. Buy less plastic, reduce waste and be mindful of the ecosystem of these small islands.

If you order fresh fish in a coastal taverna, ask for the price first — it’s usually priced by weight and can get expensive if you’re not paying attention. For a full dinner with wine, a taverna with a handwritten menu and locals inside is always your best bet. The shiny tourist restaurants at the harbour front are rarely the best value.
