Frequently Asked Questions

Italy eSIM

Italy has good 4G/LTE coverage in cities and major tourist areas. Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice are all well covered. Smaller towns and the countryside can be spottier, and in some mountain areas or remote islands you might find only 3G or even no signal. Overall it's perfectly fine for a typical trip.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Open your phone settings, go to the eSIM or mobile data section and tap 'Add eSIM'. Scan the code and you're done — takes about two minutes. Do it at home before you fly so you're connected as soon as you step off the plane in Rome or Milan.
Rome has two airports: Fiumicino (FCO), the main international hub, and the smaller Ciampino (CIA) used mostly by budget airlines. Milan is served by Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN) and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY). Other key airports include Venice (VCE), Florence (FLR), Naples (NAP), Catania (CTA) and Palermo (PMO).
Card payments are widely accepted in Italy, especially in hotels, larger restaurants and shops. That said, many smaller trattorias, local bars and market stalls still prefer cash. It's always smart to have some euros on you. Some places also charge a small cover fee (coperto) that occasionally needs to be paid in cash.
Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the sweet spot — pleasant weather, manageable crowds and everything open. July and August are scorching hot and packed with tourists, especially in Rome and the Amalfi Coast. If you want the beaches of Sicily or Sardinia go in June or September for warm water without the chaos.

Travel Tips

ItalyUseful tips for your trip

Validate your train ticket before boarding — always. In Italy, regional trains require you to stamp your ticket in the small yellow machines on the platform before you get on. Forgetting to do this can result in a fine even if you have a valid ticket. High-speed Trenitalia and Italo trains are fine without stamping since seats are reserved.

Dress code matters at churches and religious sites. In Rome especially, you'll be turned away from St Peter's Basilica or the Pantheon if your shoulders or knees are uncovered. Carry a light scarf or shawl to cover up when needed — it takes up no space and saves a lot of hassle.

Don't order a cappuccino after lunch or dinner — Italians consider it a breakfast drink and you'll get a slightly puzzled look. After meals, go for an espresso. If you want something milky later in the day, a macchiato is more acceptable. It's a small thing but locals notice.

In most Italian cities the historic centre is a ZTL zone (Zona Traffico Limitato) where private cars are banned during certain hours. Driving into one without a permit triggers an automatic fine sent to your home address weeks later. If you rent a car, check ZTL rules carefully for every city and park outside the restricted area.

If you're visiting popular museums and sites like the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums or the Uffizi, book online in advance — sometimes weeks ahead in peak season. Queues without a booking can stretch to two or three hours. The booking fee is small and completely worth it.
