Frequently Asked Questions

Norway eSIM

Norway has good 4G/LTE coverage in cities, along main roads and in most inhabited fjord areas. Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger are very well covered. In remote mountain regions and high plateaus the signal can disappear. For hikes in national parks, downloading offline maps is worth it.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — so you land in Oslo already online and can use the Ruter app for public transport straight away.
Oslo has Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL), about 50km north of the city. Bergen has Flesland (BGO). Stavanger has Sola (SVG). Tromsø (TOS) is the gateway to the Arctic. Flying between Norwegian cities is often faster than the train.
Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world. Cards are accepted everywhere and cash is barely needed. The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). A simple lunch costs 150–200 NOK, a beer in a bar 80–100 NOK. Tipping is not expected but 10% is a friendly gesture for good service.
Summer (June–August) is best for fjords, hiking and the midnight sun — the north gets 24 hours of daylight. Winter (November–March) is ideal for the Northern Lights, especially in Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands. Autumn is beautiful for colours and smaller crowds.

Travel Tips

NorwayUseful tips for your trip

The fjords are the heart of Norway — and ferries are the way to experience them. The Norway in a Nutshell route between Bergen and Oslo combines fjord cruises, mountain railway and train into one of Europe's most beautiful journeys. Book ahead, especially in summer. The Hardangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Norway is extremely expensive. To save money: picnic from the supermarket (Rema 1000, Kiwi or Coop), lunch menus are cheaper than dinner, and buy alcohol from Vinmonopolet (the state liquor store) rather than bars. Norway also has the right to roam (Allemannsretten) — you can camp in nature for free.

The Lofoten Islands are one of the world's most spectacular destinations — dramatic mountains rising straight from the sea, picturesque fishing villages and Northern Lights in winter. Fly to Svolvær or Leknes from Oslo or Bergen. Book accommodation very early in summer — the rorbuer (traditional fishermen's cabins) fill up fast.

Bergen is the gateway to the fjords and a beautiful city in its own right. The Bryggen Wharf (UNESCO World Heritage) is best visited early morning. The Fløibanen funicular takes you up Mount Fløyen in 8 minutes with breathtaking views over the city. Bergen is famous for its rain — pack a good waterproof jacket.

Norwegian salmon is world-famous — and in the country of origin it's fresh and affordable. Try gravlaks (cured salmon) or røkt laks (smoked salmon) at the fish market in Bergen or Oslo. Brunost (brown cheese made from whey) is uniquely Norwegian — slightly sweet and caramel-flavoured, best on crispbread.
