Frequently Asked Questions

Portugal eSIM

Portugal has solid 4G/LTE coverage in Lisbon, Porto and the main tourist areas in the Algarve. Even on Madeira and the Azores coverage is surprisingly good. In very rural parts of the Alentejo or remote mountain villages it can thin out, but for most travellers this is rarely an issue.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Connected in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — so you land in Lisbon or Porto already online with Maps and public transport apps ready.
Lisbon has Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), right near the city centre. Porto has Francisco SĂĄ Carneiro Airport (OPO) about 11km from the centre. For the Algarve, Faro Airport (FAR) is the main gateway. Funchal on Madeira (FNC) and Ponta Delgada on SĂŁo Miguel (PDL) are the main gateways for the islands.
Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Card payments are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. In small cafés, local markets and rural tasca taverns cash is often preferred. Having some cash is always sensible, especially on day trips to the countryside.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — pleasant weather, fewer crowds than summer and lower prices. July and August are hot, packed and pricier, but the Algarve beaches are at their best. Lisbon and Porto are rewarding year-round and even winter weather is mild. Madeira has year-round temperatures between 18–25°C.

Travel Tips

Portugal — Useful tips for your trip

Lisbon is a very hilly city — factor that into hotel choice and walk planning. The Alfama historic district has steep cobblestone alleys that get slippery after rain. Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential. Rather than struggling uphill, use the historic lifts (elevadores) and trams — they’re part of the cityscape and genuinely useful.

Pastel de nata are not just a souvenir — eat them warm, fresh from the oven, with cinnamon and icing sugar. The original Pasteis de BelĂ©m bakery in Lisbon always has a queue but is worth it. In Porto, Francesinha — a hearty sandwich with cured meats and a rich tomato-beer sauce — is the local dish everyone should try at least once.

Lisbon’s iconic tram 28 is very crowded with tourists and pickpockets. If you really want to ride it, go very early in the morning or late evening. Otherwise the metro and regular buses are more efficient and less crowded. Buy a Viva Viagem card at the airport or station — it works on all public transport in Lisbon.

The Douro wine region, just one hour east of Porto, is one of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes — terraced vineyards, river cruises and wine tastings directly at the quintas. Rent a car or book a day trip from Porto. The best time for harvest and the most beautiful colours is September–October.

Beach holiday in the Algarve? Book early for July–August as top beaches like Praia da Marinha, Lagos and the Benagil Cave are extremely popular. The Benagil Cave is best seen from inside by kayak or stand-up paddle — not from a boat. Tours start early morning before the tourist rush.
