Frequently Asked Questions

Romania eSIM

Romania has good 4G/LTE coverage in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timişoara and other major cities. In rural areas and the Carpathians the signal can weaken. Romania has surprisingly fast internet speeds in cities.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — so you land in Bucharest already online.
Bucharest has Henri Coandă Airport (OTP), the country's main international airport. Cluj-Napoca has Avram Iancu Airport (CLJ) for Transylvania. Timişoara (TSR) and Iaşi (IAS) are other key regional airports.
Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON). Cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops but in rural areas, markets and small restaurants cash is common. Romania is one of the most affordable travel destinations in Europe.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for Bucharest and the Carpathians. Summer is great for mountain hiking and the Black Sea beaches. Winter offers skiing in the Carpathians and Christmas markets.

Travel Tips

RomaniaUseful tips for your trip

Transylvania is the heart of Romania — medieval towns like Sighişoara, Braşov and Sibiu are extraordinarily well preserved. Braşov sits at the foot of the Carpathians and is the best base for hiking. Bran Castle (supposedly Dracula's castle) is a tourist draw but Peleş Castle in Sinaia is architecturally far more impressive.

Bucharest is bigger and bolder than you expect. The Palace of Parliament is the second-largest administrative building in the world and is open for tours. The Floreasca district and Cismigiu Park show the elegant interwar Bucharest. Some call it the 'Paris of the East' — with good reason.

The Carpathians are extraordinarily beautiful and relatively untouched. Bucegi National Park and the Fagăraş Mountains have spectacular hiking routes with far fewer tourists than comparable areas in western Europe. For hiking, bring a good topographic map as signage can be inconsistent.

Romanian cuisine is hearty and delicious. Try mămăligă (polenta with sour cream and cheese), mici (grilled small meat rolls, traditionally eaten at lunch), ciorbă (sour soup) and sarmále (stuffed cabbage rolls). In restaurants in the interior you often pay less than €10 for a full dinner.

Romania has some of the world's most beautiful painted monasteries in Bucovina — Voroneţ, Suceviţa and Moldoviţa have exterior walls covered in vivid biblical frescoes. They are in the northeast of the country, best reached by rental car from Suceava.

Romania — Dracula's Bran Castle, the Carpathians, Bucovina monasteries and Bucharest with its lively nightlife. Order your eSIM, get your QR code instantly, set up before you fly. Connected in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Braşov and everywhere, no roaming.
