Frequently Asked Questions

Turkey eSIM

Turkey has solid 4G/LTE coverage across the country, including in cities like Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir as well as popular coastal resorts. In rural areas and mountain villages coverage can be patchier, but you'll rarely have issues in tourist areas.
After your purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Just go to your phone's settings, find the eSIM or mobile data section, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. The whole thing takes about two minutes. We recommend doing it at home before you leave so you're online the second you land.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is Turkey's main international hub and one of the busiest in Europe. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is Istanbul's second airport, mainly used by budget airlines. Other major airports include Ankara Esenboğa (ESB), Antalya (AYT), Izmir Adnan Menderes (ADB), Bodrum (BJV) and Dalaman (DLM).
Turkey uses the Turkish lira (TRY). Card payments are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops in cities and tourist areas. In smaller towns, markets and taxis cash is often preferred, so it's worth having some lira on you. ATMs are easy to find in most towns.
It depends on what you're after. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for sightseeing in Istanbul and Cappadocia — mild weather, fewer crowds. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are best in summer (June–August) if you're after beach and sun. Winter is quiet and cheap in most of the country, though Istanbul is worth visiting year-round.

Travel Tips

TurkeyUseful tips for your trip

Get an Istanbulkart if you're spending more than a day in the city. It works on all public transport — metro, tram, bus, ferry — and saves you a lot compared to buying single tickets. You can pick one up at any metro station or ferry terminal.

Haggling is expected in the Grand Bazaar and other covered markets, but not in regular shops or restaurants. Start at roughly half the asking price and go from there. It's all part of the experience — just keep it friendly and don't feel pressured to buy.

Turkish tea (çay) is offered everywhere — in shops, at the barber, after meals. Accepting it is a natural part of socialising. If someone offers you a glass, it's a friendly gesture, not a sales trick. The small tulip-shaped glasses are refilled automatically, so just turn yours upside down when you've had enough.

If you're visiting mosques, cover your shoulders and knees and remove your shoes before entering. Women should bring a headscarf. Most mosques provide coverings at the entrance if you forget. The best time to visit the big ones like the Blue Mosque is between prayer times to avoid crowds.

Renting a car is the best way to explore the Aegean coast, Cappadocia or eastern Turkey at your own pace. Roads are generally good and driving is straightforward. Just be aware that parking in city centres, especially Istanbul, can be a real headache — in the big cities, public transport is a much smarter choice.
