Frequently Asked Questions

Australia eSIM

Australia has strong 4G/LTE coverage in its cities and suburban areas — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide are all well covered. Once you leave the cities coverage thins out quickly, and in the outback and rural areas it can be very limited or non-existent. If you’re heading inland, download offline maps.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home before you fly — the flight to Australia is long and when you land in Sydney or Melbourne you’ll want Maps and transport apps working straight away.
The main international airports are Sydney (SYD), Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), Perth (PER) and Adelaide (ADL). Cairns (CNS) is the main gateway for the Great Barrier Reef area. Darwin (DRW) serves the Northern Territory. Flying between these cities is the norm — the distances are too big for road trips between capitals.
The currency is the Australian dollar (AUD). Card payments are very widely accepted and Australia is actually one of the most cashless countries in the world — many places barely take cash anymore. Contactless payment is standard everywhere. You really don’t need much cash, but having a small amount can help at markets or rural spots.
Australia has so many different regions that the best time really depends on where you’re going. Broadly speaking: in the south (Sydney, Melbourne) spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are ideal. In the north (Cairns, Darwin) the dry season from May to October is the comfortable time — the wet season from December to April can be intensely humid and hot. Queensland coastal regions are pleasant year-round.

Travel Tips

AustraliaUseful tips for your trip

Australia is enormous — don’t underestimate the distances. Sydney to Melbourne is over 800km, Sydney to Cairns is nearly 2000km. Domestic flights between cities are often the only sensible option. If you’re planning a road trip, factor in at least two weeks for the east coast. A car is almost always needed outside the cities.

Take beach rip current warnings seriously. Australia has a system of ‘patrolled sections’ at popular beaches: always swim between the red and yellow flags where lifeguards patrol. Rip currents can be very strong and catch even experienced swimmers out. If you get caught in one, swim sideways not against it.

Driving in Australia’s outback and rural areas is different from most countries. Many unsealed roads require a 4WD vehicle and attempting them in a regular car can get you seriously stuck. Always check road conditions before heading out, carry plenty of water and let someone know your route. Mobile coverage is often zero in remote areas.

Australia has intense UV radiation that many visitors underestimate. Sunscreen SPF 50+ is essential, even on cloudy days. The Australian saying ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat — is a genuine warning. You can get serious sunburn in an hour at the beach on an Australian summer day.

The Great Ocean Road along the Victorian coast is one of the world’s great road trips — plan at least two full days. The Great Barrier Reef is best explored from Cairns or the Whitsunday Islands. For the Red Centre and Uluru (Ayers Rock) allow at least three days based in Alice Springs. Early morning and sunset are the best times to see Uluru.

Australia is massive — from Sydney to the Outback, Melbourne to the Great Barrier Reef. Order your eSIM, get the QR code instantly, scan and set up before you board. 4G/5G across Telstra & Optus networks, no roaming.
