Frequently Asked Questions

Austria eSIM

Austria has excellent 4G/LTE coverage in cities and along main transport routes. Vienna, Salzburg, Graz and Innsbruck are very well covered. In Alpine valleys and remote mountain areas the signal can weaken or disappear entirely. For hikes at higher altitudes downloading offline maps is a good idea.
After purchase you’ll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap ‘Add eSIM’ and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home before you fly — so you land in Vienna already online and can use the ÖBB app or Google Maps straight away.
Vienna has Wien Schwechat Airport (VIE), about 18km from the city centre. Salzburg has Salzburg W. A. Mozart Airport (SZG), very centrally located. Innsbruck (INN) and Graz (GRZ) have further regional airports. Klagenfurt (KLU) serves Carinthia. Many visitors also fly into Munich (MUC) or Zurich (ZRH) and continue by train.
Austria uses the euro (EUR). Card payments are widely accepted but Austria is somewhat more traditional than Scandinavia — many smaller Gasthäuser, Heuriger wine taverns and market stalls prefer cash. It’s always smart to have some euros on you, especially in the countryside and mountain villages.
Winter (December–March) is peak season for skiers — Austria has some of the world’s best ski resorts including Kitzbhel, St. Anton and Ischgl. Summer (June–September) is ideal for hiking, cycling and the lakes. Vienna is wonderful year-round with special magic at Christmas. Spring and autumn are the quietest times with the best prices.

Travel Tips

AustriaUseful tips for your trip

Vienna has one of Europe’s best public transport networks. Metro, trams and buses run until midnight, and on weekends all night. Buy a 24h, 48h or 72h pass — much cheaper than individual tickets. The Wiener Linien app shows real-time connections. Taxis and Uber are expensive in Vienna; public transport is fast and reliable.

Coffee house culture in Vienna is UNESCO-listed. A real Viennese café is not somewhere you rush through — you can sit for hours, read newspapers and order just one coffee. Nobody will hurry you. The waiter automatically brings a glass of water with the coffee. Order a Melange (coffee with frothed milk) or an Einspänner (black coffee with whipped cream).

If you’re visiting Salzburg, try to see Hohensalzburg Fortress and the old town early in the morning before day-trippers from Munich arrive. Salzburg is a small city and very walkable. The Sound of Music phenomenon is real — many tourists come just for that, which locals find mildly amusing, but the tours are genuinely beautiful.

A Heuriger is an Austrian wine tavern that serves its own wine, often in the vineyard itself. Around Vienna in Grinzing, Günzing or Klosterneuburg you’ll find genuine Heurige where locals go for an evening of food and wine. The food is typically Austrian (cold meat and cheese boards, bread, salads) and the wine is the house wine from the winery.

The Vienna State Opera and the Philharmonic are world-famous but tickets can be very expensive and sell out fast. For last-minute budget: standing room tickets (Stehparterre) are sold on the day of the performance from 80 minutes before curtain and cost just €3–4. One of the greatest opera experiences in the world for the price of a coffee.

Austria has Viennese coffee houses, Alpine skiing and baroque palaces — you have better things to do than hunt for a SIM card. Order your eSIM, get your QR code instantly, set up before you fly. Connected in Vienna, Salzburg and the Alps, no roaming.
