Frequently Asked Questions

Azores eSIM

The Azores have good 4G/LTE coverage on São Miguel and most populated islands. In remote rural areas and on smaller islands the signal can weaken. Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Horta are well covered.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home. The Azores are Portuguese and therefore have EU mobile tariffs.
São Miguel has João Paulo II Airport (PDL) in Ponta Delgada, the main one for international flights. Terceira has Lajes (TER), also used by transatlantic charter flights. Faial has Horta (HOR). Santa Maria (SMA) is a historic transatlantic stop. All islands have small airports.
The Azores use the euro (EUR) and are part of the EU. Cards are accepted everywhere. The Azores are significantly cheaper than mainland Portugal — restaurants, accommodation and entrance fees are very affordable.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal for hiking and good weather. Summer (July–August) is warmer and more touristy. Winter is mild but rainy. The Azores have a variable climate — you can experience all four seasons in one day. Always pack a rain jacket.

Travel Tips

AzoresUseful tips for your trip

São Miguel is the largest and greenest island — volcanic crater lakes (Sete Cidades, Furnas), hot springs, hydrangea fields and the Lagoa do Fogo. The Furnas caldeira has natural geothermal activity — the traditional Cozido das Furnas (stew) is literally cooked underground by geothermal heat.

The Azores are one of the world's best destinations for whale and dolphin watching — blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are regularly seen. Tours depart from Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), Horta (Faial) and Lajes do Pico (Pico). Advance booking is recommended.

Each Azores island has its own character. Flores is the greenest and perhaps most beautiful. Pico has Portugal's highest mountain (2,351m) and is surrounded by lava fields and vineyards. Faial is known as the 'Blue Island' and Horta is a world sailing meeting point. Corvo is the smallest island with only 400 inhabitants.

The Azores are a paradise for hikers. Almost every island has spectacular walking routes along crater lakes, lava fields and coastal cliffs. The PR1 route on São Miguel (Sete Cidades) is one of the most beautiful in Portugal. On Flores the trails pass waterfalls and turquoise lakes.

Azorean cuisine uses fresh local ingredients: Atlantic tuna, lapas (grilled limpets with butter and garlic), alcatra (braised beef on Terceira) and queijo da ilha (island cheese). Local pineapple from São Miguel is world-famous and absolutely delicious — very different from imported pineapple.

The Azores — volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, green landscapes and whale watching. Order your eSIM, get your QR code instantly, set up before you fly. Connected across the islands, no roaming stress.
