Barbados has two very different coastlines. The west coast (Platinum Coast) has calm, clear water and luxury hotels — ideal for snorkelling and swimming. The east coast (Atlantic side) has dramatic waves — ideal for surfing and walks but not for swimming. Crane Beach in the southeast is one of the most beautiful.

Barbados is deeply rooted in British Caribbean tradition — cricket is a national passion, rum is the country's pride and courtesy is pronounced. Mount Gay Rum distillery, the world's oldest (founded 1703), offers tours. Barbadian rum is world-famous.

Barbados is expensive but affordable alternatives exist. Route taxis (fixed-price minibuses) are very cheap. Local rum bars and the fish fry at Oistins (Friday and Saturday evenings) offer authentic Barbados experiences at affordable prices.

Cou-cou and flying fish is the national dish of Barbados — flying fish is the island's symbol and appears on the 1-dollar bill. Rum punch is the traditional drink. Local restaurants called rum shops are cheaper and more authentic than tourist restaurants.

Harrison's Cave is one of the Caribbean's finest cave systems — an electric tram takes you through crystal formations and waterfalls. Welchman Hall Gully is a natural woodland with ravines and monkey troops. Barbados Wildlife Reserve has green monkeys roaming free.
