The entire island reef is a marine protected area (Bonaire National Marine Park). The water is extraordinarily clear (30+ metre visibility) and full of coral and marine life.

Bonaire is famous for its huge flamingo colonies. Washington-Slagbaai National Park in the north has thousands of flamingos in natural salt lakes. Visit around sunset when the pink birds are especially beautiful. Donkeys on the roads are common — drive carefully.

Bonaire is a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers — Sorobon Beach is one of the Caribbean's best spots. The constant trade wind makes the east coast ideal. Snorkelling is also excellent without a diving licence — at Lac Bay and Klein Bonaire.

Klein Bonaire is an uninhabited island just offshore from Kralendijk — 5 minutes by boat. It is an important nesting site for sea turtles and an excellent snorkelling and diving spot. Boats run regularly from Kralendijk.
