The Algerian Sahara is one of the world's most breathtaking deserts. The Tamanrasset area and Tassili n'Ajjer (UNESCO World Heritage) with its millennia-old rock paintings are absolute highlights. Tours from Tamanrasset with Tuareg guides are the most authentic way to experience the desert.

Algeria is one of the least visited countries in North Africa, which makes it especially interesting for adventurers. A visa is required for most European nationalities — apply well in advance. Organised tours are recommended for a first visit.

Algiers (La Blanche) has a beautiful old city (the Kasbah of Algiers, UNESCO World Heritage), a stunning coastline and a vibrant French-Arab cultural mix. Oran in the west has a special music scene — raï music, made famous globally by Khaled and Cheb Mami, comes from this city.

Algerian cuisine is rich and aromatic. Couscous is the national dish — try it with lamb, vegetables and harissa. Chorba (soup), mechoui (roast lamb) and merguez (spiced sausage) are further highlights. Mint tea is essential and is offered as a welcoming drink.

Algeria is Africa's largest country and offers incredible diversity — Sahara desert, Atlas Mountains, Mediterranean coast and Roman ruins. Timgad and Djemila are extraordinarily well-preserved Roman cities that rival Pompeii in some respects. These treasures are still barely known.
