Malaysia is multicultural and largely Muslim-majority, so dress modestly at mosques and religious sites (cover shoulders and knees; women may need a headscarf). The food scene is a highlight — hawker centres and night markets are cheap, delicious and mostly halal.

Malaysia uses the UK-style three-pin Type G plug at 240V. Bring a UK/Malaysia adapter, as not every hotel provides one; most modern chargers handle the voltage automatically.

Don't drink the tap water — stick to bottled or boiled water, which is cheap and everywhere. Be a little cautious with ice and cut fruit at very small stalls, especially early in your trip, and carry hand sanitiser.
