How to Get from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the City (2026)

Take the M11 metro if you are travelling light and staying near an onward rail connection. Choose Havaist if its stop is close to your hotel. Take an official taxi if you need a door-to-door journey, especially with several people or bulky luggage. There is no single “city centre” stop that works for every Istanbul hotel.
Your first decision should be about the neighbourhood, not the cheapest ticket. Taksim, Sultanahmet and Kadıköy require different journeys. Check the airport code, too: this guide is for Istanbul Airport, IST, on the European side, not Sabiha Gökçen, SAW.
The short comparison
These are planning estimates, not guaranteed fares or arrival times. Road journeys can stretch considerably in rush-hour traffic.
| Option | Best for | Rough time after reaching the transport stop | Cost guidance |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| M11 plus city transport | Light luggage; Taksim, Şişli or Levent | About 60–90 minutes to many central hotels | Budget roughly TRY100–200 with a city connection, excluding the card |
| Havaist coach | Hotels near a served stop; luggage | Around 90 minutes to Taksim; around 110 to the Sultanahmet-area stop | Budget around TRY470 per adult for these central routes; recheck |
| Official taxi or Uber Taxi | Door-to-door travel; groups | Roughly 45–90 minutes, sometimes longer | Budget several thousand lira per vehicle; check a live estimate |
Allow additional time for passport control, baggage collection and the walk through the terminal. A train's advertised running time is not the time from touching down to checking into your hotel.
M11 metro: cheap, but not a direct train to every tourist district
The M11 serves the airport and connects with the M2 at Gayrettepe. The airport-to-Gayrettepe train journey takes approximately half an hour; walking to the station and changing lines add time.
Inside the terminal, follow the Metro / M11 signs. The station is not beside the baggage carousel, so keep following the signed route rather than assuming you have missed it after a few minutes. Travellers with restricted mobility should check lift access and any service notices before choosing a multi-change trip.
At the station:
1. Buy or load an Istanbulkart at a suitable ticket machine.
2. Keep enough balance for the airport line and the onward journey.
3. Choose the train towards Gayrettepe for the M2 connection.
4. At Gayrettepe, follow the M2 interchange signs and check the direction before boarding.
For Taksim, take the M2 towards Yenikapı and leave at Taksim. For Şişli–Mecidiyeköy, the same connection can be useful. For a hotel in Levent, check which M2 direction and exit actually puts you nearest the address.
What about Sultanahmet?
The M11 does not stop at Sultanahmet. One established rail route is M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 towards Yenikapı, then a connection towards the T1 tram. For example, Vezneciler is within walking distance of the Laleli–Üniversite tram stop, where the T1 towards Kabataş serves Sultanahmet.
That street-level interchange is less appealing with a heavy case, rain or tired children. Check the whole route, including the walk, rather than accepting an itinerary simply because it contains trains. Istanbul's rail network changes; the airport's current transport page also lists the M11 extension towards Halkalı. Compare live routing if a western or Marmaray connection suits your hotel better.
Metro tickets and operating hours
M11 has a distance-based fare structure, unlike a simple flat-fare city ride. The maximum initial deduction can be higher than the fare for the section you travel. Do not build your budget around a refund: eligibility depends on the card and current rules, and an anonymous visitor card may not qualify.
For budgeting, allow roughly TRY100–200 for the M11 and one onward city connection, excluding the card itself; this is a cushion, not a published through-fare. A practical approach is to load enough for several rides rather than the exact advertised airport fare. Each change may mean another charge. Our Istanbulkart buying and top-up guide (https://www.airlivo.com/blog/how-to-get-istanbulkart) explains the basic card options.
Do not assume the M11 runs all night. Service is generally from early morning to around midnight, but first and last trains differ by station and direction. Check the airport's transport information and current operator notices for your date. Weekend night service on another metro line does not automatically include the airport line.
Havaist: fewer changes and room for luggage
Havaist runs airport coaches to several parts of Istanbul. Follow signs to the transport area on level −2 and check your destination on the departure board. Platforms can change, so use the live information rather than an old platform number from a travel blog.
For a first visit, the important distinction is between Taksim and the Sultanahmet-area service, whose stop is listed as Çatladıkapı (Sultanahmet). Çatladıkapı is not the same place as the Sultanahmet tram platform. Plot the stop against your accommodation: an uphill walk or a short final taxi may still be necessary.
Current route listings put both central journeys at around TRY470 one way, with approximately 90 minutes to Taksim and 110 minutes to Çatladıkapı. Treat those as a budget and a baseline, not a promise. Confirm the destination, fare and next departure on Havaist's official website (https://www.hava.ist/) before buying.
There are also routes serving other districts. A coach to a stop near your hotel can be simpler than travelling to Taksim just because it is a familiar name. Conversely, a cheap-looking coach followed by a long taxi ride may erase the saving.
Buying a Havaist ticket
Use the official website or app, or ask staff at the airport sales point about the available payment methods. Do not assume an Istanbulkart loaded for city transport covers your coach ticket; verify the current payment arrangement separately.
The official online ticket page currently states that tickets are valid for 72 hours after purchase and that there is no date-and-time seat reservation. It also warns that online tickets cannot be cancelled or refunded once created. Buying an online ticket is therefore not the same as reserving the next departure.
Keep the ticket or QR code available offline. At the coach, confirm the destination before handing over luggage, retain any baggage tag and keep passports and valuables with you.
Taxi and Uber: compare the whole vehicle cost
For an official taxi, follow the airport signs to the managed rank. Ignore unsolicited offers inside the arrivals hall. Show the full hotel address, not just its name: similar hotel names occur in different districts.
Uber operates licensed taxis at IST; it is not necessarily a separate private-car service. Its current airport instructions describe a six-digit PIN: request in the app, follow the pickup instructions to the official taxi queue, and show the PIN to the appropriate driver. Follow your app if the meeting arrangement changes.
There is no universal fixed fare to “the centre.” Traffic, destination, taxi category and applicable charges affect the total. For context, Uber's airport page displayed an average of about TRY2,655 across its recent IST taxi trips when checked; that is not a quote for your hotel. Ask for a live estimate and confirm tolls, payment method and meter use before setting off.
For three or four adults, compare that total with several coach fares plus any final connection. Also check that the chosen vehicle can take your suitcases; passenger capacity does not guarantee enough luggage space.
Landing after midnight
The most dependable categories to investigate are Havaist's overnight departures and official taxis. Overnight coach availability does not mean every route departs every few minutes. Some schedules have substantial gaps.
If your flight lands close to the metro's final departure, use the likely time you will reach the platform, not the scheduled landing time. Passport queues and delayed bags can easily change the answer. Keep a coach or taxi alternative ready rather than rushing through an unfamiliar terminal for a train you may miss.
Before leaving arrivals
Save your hotel's address, nearest useful stop and final walking route. Download your ticket and keep some Turkish lira for backup. Mobile data helps with live departures, map changes and taxi pickup instructions; a travel eSIM is one way to keep those working outside airport Wi-Fi.
For SAW, start again with that airport's transport options: it has a different metro connection and different shuttle services. Do not buy an IST transfer simply because your booking says “Istanbul.”
For the return journey, allow for road traffic and check the airline's airport arrival advice. The transfer that feels easiest after a flight may not be the most predictable option before one.
