Thailand has solid 4G/LTE coverage in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and most tourist areas. On islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao connectivity is generally good but can vary in remote bays or deep jungle. Overall it's much better than most people expect.

After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to your phone settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan the code. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport is huge and you'll want Google Maps and Grab working the moment you land.

The main airport is Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Bangkok's international hub. Don Mueang (DMK) is Bangkok's second airport used mostly by budget airlines and domestic flights. Other key airports include Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Koh Samui (USM) and Krabi (KBV).

The currency is the Thai baht (THB). Cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and malls, but many street markets, tuk-tuks, local street food stalls and temples are cash only. Withdraw some baht at the airport on arrival. Foreign card fees are usually 220 baht per withdrawal so withdraw bigger amounts to avoid repeated fees.

It depends what you're after. November to February is the coolest and driest time — ideal for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Gulf islands. March to May is high summer and swelteringly hot. The rainy season (June–October) brings daily showers but also much lower prices and fewer tourists. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) and the Gulf side (Koh Samui) have different rainy seasons so check before you book.

Thailand — Useful tips for your trip

Download Grab before you leave for Thailand. It's the main ride-hailing app and works like Uber. You can book taxis, motorbike taxis and even food delivery. It saves the endless haggling with tuk-tuk drivers and you always see the price upfront.

When visiting temples in Thailand you need to cover up. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Many popular temples like Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok provide sarong-like wraps at the entrance, but it's easier to just carry a light pair of long trousers or a sarong yourself.

For getting from Bangkok to the southern islands, the cheapest and most local way is an overnight bus or train to Surat Thani or Chumphon and then a ferry. Book the bus or train directly online — don't pay the inflated rates at tourist agency desks near Khao San Road.

Eat at street stalls with long queues of locals. A busy gark kitchen means fresh food with high turnover. A portion of Pad Thai or Khao Man Gai often costs just 40–60 baht (around €1–2) and is often better than expensive restaurants. Avoid places heavily advertised in English for tourists — that's usually a sign that prices have gone up.

In Thailand it is illegal and deeply offensive to criticise or mock the royal family. The lese-majesté law applies to foreigners too and can result in prison sentences. Keep any personal opinions about the monarchy to yourself. The same applies to stepping on or pointing at banknotes that show the king's image.
