Prepare Offline Maps That Actually Help When Your Connection Drops
You saved the hotel, but outside the station the streets will not load. A saved place, a recently viewed map and a downloaded area are not the same thing. An offline backup works best when you prepare the area and test the kind of directions you will need.
Choose for your mode of travel
Google Maps supports offline driving directions when the entire route fits inside the downloaded area. Offline walking, cycling and public-transit directions are not available in that app. Reading the streets on a downloaded map is different from getting guided walking navigation.
Apple Maps offers offline downloads on iPhones running iOS 17 or later in supported areas. Depending on regional support, downloaded maps can include directions for walking, cycling and public transit as well as driving. Do not apply one app's feature list to the other, or assume all destinations support downloads.

Download beyond the hotel neighborhood
In Google Maps, look for the download option in the place details or open offline maps through the profile menu. Choose the required area, check storage and wait for the download to finish. Menu wording can vary with device and app version.

In Apple Maps, use the available download option in place information or the offline maps section. Check the result on the iPhone you will carry. Downloads do not automatically sync across all your devices.
Separate GPS from fresh information
Under suitable conditions, a phone can calculate its position from satellite signals without mobile data. That does not fetch map files, traffic or updated opening hours. Position accuracy may also suffer indoors or between tall buildings.
Google Maps does not provide live traffic or alternative routes during offline driving. Stored information in other apps should not be treated as a live notice of a canceled service or closed road either. Recheck changeable details when a connection returns.
Keep an address you can show someone
Save the accommodation's name and address in the local writing system in a note that opens offline. That can help when asking a driver or staff member for directions even if automatic routing is unavailable.
Before departure, update downloads and check whether storage optimization can remove unused areas. The backup needs to be on the device in your pocket, not merely something you remember downloading months earlier.
