Frequently Asked Questions

Belize eSIM

Belize has good 4G/LTE coverage in Belize City, San Ignacio, Dangriga and most towns. In rural areas, the jungle and on remote cayes the signal can weaken.
After purchase you'll get a QR code by email. Go to settings, tap 'Add eSIM' and scan. Done in two minutes. Best to set it up at home — land in Belize already online.
Belize has Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, the main airport with connections to the USA, Mexico and Central America. San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and other cayes have smaller airstrips for domestic flights.
Belize uses the Belize dollar (BZD), pegged 2:1 to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted everywhere. Cards in hotels and larger restaurants, but cash for rural areas and small businesses. Belize is more expensive than its Central American neighbours.
November to April is the best time — dry season, ideal for snorkelling and diving. May to October is rainy season with higher hurricane risk (especially September–October). The water is warm year-round (26–29°C).

BelizeUseful tips for your trip

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-longest coral reef in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Great Blue Hole is one of the world's most famous dive sites — a circular underwater cave 300m across and 125m deep. Dive trips are easily organised from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

Belize has extraordinary Maya ruins in the jungle — Caracol, Xunantunich and Lamanai are the most impressive. Caracol was once larger than Belize City itself. Tikal in Guatemala is reachable as a day trip from San Ignacio and is even more impressive.

Caye Caulker is the more relaxed and affordable alternative to Ambergris Caye, with the motto 'Go Slow'. The island is car-free and very small. Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) is more touristy and lively. Both are reachable by water taxi or small plane from Belize City.

The Belize interior (San Ignacio area) offers jungle adventures: canoeing, jungle hikes, birdwatching and visiting the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave with Maya artefacts and skeletal remains. The ATM cave is one of the best adventure experiences in all of Central America.

Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America — making it particularly welcoming for anglophone travellers. The population is multi-ethnic: Creoles, Mestizos, Maya, Garifuna and Mennonites. Garifuna culture on the coast (drums and traditional music) is a unique experience.
