Why is my phone using data so fast?

Background activity is usually the culprit: automatic app updates, cloud backup (iCloud/Google Photos), video autoplay, and high-resolution streaming. Turning off background app refresh and auto-updates, and watching video at lower quality, can cut usage significantly.
