Will I be charged for roaming if my home SIM stays on?

Simply leaving it on doesn't cost anything. Charges mainly come from your home line using the internet abroad while its data roaming is on, so keep that off. Note that some carriers may also charge a separate roaming rate for incoming/outgoing calls and texts (independent of data).
